SPORTS TOURISM

Malaysia is increasingly and actively promoting itself as an organiser and host to various world-class sports events and recreational activities with the aim of becoming a major sports tourism destination in the Asia-Pacific region. The 1998 Commonwealth Games, Formula 1 Championship, F1 Powerboat Championship, and Le Tour de Langkawi organised by Malaysia are some of the sports events that have caught the world’s attention.

With the availability of fully equipped and sophisticated sports facilities and infrastructure, Malaysia is now well positioned to organise any kind of sports events. The National Sports Complex and the Sepang F1 Circuit, for example, are world-class sports facilities which have become the main venue for prestigious sports events.

Malaysia is blessed with a natural environment that is not only beautiful but also conducive for various adventure sports. This has become an attraction to tourists, especially those with special interests and hobbies who have come here to enjoy their sport in an ever challenging environment. In addition, Malaysia has more than 250 golf courses located throughout the country to attract golfers.

The main agency responsible for sports tourism is the Youth and Sports Ministry while the Tourism Ministry helps in terms of its promotion.
