SPEECH TEXT DATO’ DR. ONG HONG PENG FOR THE OPENING OF MALAYSIAN DOMESTIC TOURISM FAIR 2009 3rd July 2009 at 9.30 a.m. - PWTC, Kuala Lumpur. Y.Bhg. Dato’ Mohd Zainal Abidin bin Hj. Abd. Kadir President, National Tourism Council of Malaysia Y.Bhg. Dato’ Shamsul Falak b Tan Sri Kadir Organising Chairman Malaysian Domestic Tourism Fair 2009 His Excellencies, members from the Diplomatic Corp. Leaders from the tourism industry EXCO of the National Tourism Council of Malaysia Members from the media Ladies and gentlemen First of all, I would like to thank the organizer, National Tourism Council of Malaysia (NTCM) for inviting me to officiate this Malaysian Domestic Tourism Fair 2009. Let me also congratulate them for taking the initiative to organize this 3 days fair, solely focusing on domestic travel. I am sure NTCM especially the Organising Committee have been working hard to ensure that this Fair will be a resounding success. Ladies and Gentlemen; Given the challenging global economic downturn, I am pleased to note that we have done well up to April this year. This reflected by the tourist arrivals which registered an increase of 3.4% for the January-April 2009 compare with the same p[period in 2010. However, the adverse effects of the economic slowdown is compounded by the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic. As a result, we experienced negative growth of 0.3% in May 2009 compared with corresponding month in 2008. Although the tourist arrival figures for June 2009 are not out yet, we expect a sharper decline. This is based on the feedback from our Tourism Malaysia offices whereby the drop in sales were reported by tour agents in the region 50-90% in Beijing and 20-30% in Taipei and Seoul. Major outbound operators recorded cancellations, for instance in South China more than 200 pax, Japan, 1000 pax to Malaysia were canceled. Based on International Air Transport Associations (IATA) figures, the passenger demand for flights in May 2009 declined 9.3% compared to the same month the previous year. As such, we need to brace ourselves for the tough challenges ahead. The silver lining-Meeting on H1N1 with YB Minister of Tourism and YB Minister of Health and Industry Players on 1st July-key conclusions: containment stage, measures undertaken in line with WHO and Malaysia is definitely very safe for both international and domestic tourist. Ladies and Gentlemen; What are the product offerings that can create blue oceans and attract increase the demand for travel and boost the travel industry? In this regard, I wish to highlight the niche market and new products that are in the pipeline. These include: Golden Third Age (G3A), Building Bridges and Sophisticated Office Ladies (SOL) The niche areas include Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition (MICE), Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H), Homestay and shopping whereby the Malaysian Mega Sales Carnival will be launched from 4 July-31 August 2009. Ladies and Gentlemen; I am confident that the industry players will continue to work together with the Ministry of Tourism to ensure continuous growth in the tourism industry. The strong partnership between the public and private sector, and most importantly firm support from the Malaysian government have contributed to the success of the tourism industry. However, there is still much to do and many more challenges to overcome. If we want the tourism industry to be a major economic force in the country, we need to be swift to turn all challenges into opportunities. Synergize our strengths to move forward and make Malaysia the destination in Asia. Malaysia is after all Truly Asia. With that, I once again would like to thank NTCM for organizing this fair. This is an occasion where the private sector leads the initiative to spur this industry. At this challenging times, assist to make our tourism industry more resilience.
